THE TRASHING OF GENERAL PATRAEUS

Here are some excerpts from an article forwarded to us by RiteOn.org Contributor DS of St Charles County, MO, entitled “Trashing Patreaus”... Here’s the link to the article for those who would like to read it in its entirety.

 http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110010587

*****************
(article excerpts)
“... Members of the Democratic leadership and their supporters have now normalized the practice of accusing their opponents of lying. If other members of the Democratic Party don't move quickly to repudiate this turn, the ability of the U.S. political system to function will be impaired in a way no one would wish for.

..."Betrayal," as every military officer knows,...

... is a word that through the history of their profession bears the stain of acts that are both dishonorable and unforgivable. That is to say, MoveOn.org didn't stumble upon this word; it was chosen with specific intent, to convey the most serious accusation possible against General Petraeus, that his word is false, that he is a liar and that he is willing to betray his country. The next and obvious word to which this equation with betrayal leads is treason. That it is merely insinuated makes it worse.

... More surprising and troubling are the formerly liberal institutions and politicians who now share this political ethos.

...Under these new terms, public policy is no longer subject to debate, discussion and disagreement over competing views and interpretations. Instead, the opposition is reduced to the status of liar. Now the opposition is not merely wrong, but lacks legitimacy and politicalstanding. The goal here is not to debate, but to destroy.”(end of excerpts)

RITEON.ORG COMMENTARY...
This last paragraph has particular significance in that it could be seen as having universal validity when applied to today’s brand of political activity at the State and local levels. One could fairly ask, “What have we become and are we intelligent enough to put a stop to no limit, uncompromising political action in time to prevent self destruction?”

Agree with him or not, the attack on General Patraeus by politicians who should know better signals a willingness by some elements of American society that they are willing to do whatever it takes, up to and including treason, to gain control of the American People in this next election. Let’s hope some real leadership emerges in the Republican Party that will offer people real hope and a real alternative to surrender.
