Richard A. Viguerie, publisher of ConservativeHQ.com and the pioneer of political direct mail wants the leadership of the Republican Party to leave... Now, before it’s too late.
Though we have repeatedly called for changes in leadership in the Republican Party, we don’t necessarily agree with Viguerie on where in the hierarchy the purge should begin. In viewing what has happened since the decline of conservative influence, especially in the area of local tax policy, we believe changes should occur from the bottom up and not necessarily, as Viquerie recommends, from the top down. Though some changes are definitely in order Republicans should take care to avoid throwing the baby out with the bathwater!
All indications are that, barring a major change in direction, the political toll that will be taken on Republicans at the top, after the November elections, will be gut wrenching. However, we should understand that national leaders are well-heeled professionals and therefore less impacted and more “responsive” to which way the wind is blowing. After a solid defeat they are more able to see the “handwriting on the wall” than are local and state leaders. Local political leaders, time and again, will risk stiffing the voters in order to, as quietly as possible, protect their special interest supporters! (That said we shouldn’t disregard the fact that some are simply fools being used!) In the past, slick and expensive campaign brochures have distracted inattentive voters and allowed many politicians to get their pockets full before the electorate could catch up with them... that’s exactly what has happened!
Take the case of a former politician who resigned his job in the Legislature at around $32,000 a year to take a job with private industry at more than $100,000 plus lots of “bennies.” In our view, this former office holder turned out to be a representative of special interests and when he left, he and/or his “special interest” supporters arranged for a replacement with a similar mindset.
This sort of practice does not serve the interest of the Party or its supporters for so many reasons we don’t have room to list them! Yet Party leaders not only support this kind of activity, they generate it! They apparently believe that voters don’t see or understand what they are doing. Well, the reckoning is on its way! The trouble is the grass roots supporters of the Party are the ones who will pay!
Conservative voters see that local taxes have skyrocketed under Republican local and County leadership. We all thought that because these people salute the flag, go to church and talk like conservatives that they WERE conservatives! Wrong! We need to wake up and see what’s actually happening. What a reward for Republican loyalty! This is happening all over the country and is what has turned off grass roots Republicans. There is truth in the observation that “all politics is local” and that’s why we believe that increases in local taxes throughout the country are the “silent culprit.”
Republican political hacks say, “Where else are conservative voters going to go? Certainly not to the Democrats!” Well, where they are going to go is to not volunteer, not give money and STAY HOME on election day and that spells defeat, big time, for Republican candidates.
Important national issues have certainly played a part in loss of popularity among the grass roots Republicans. Issues such as protecting the border, the falling value of the dollar and high gas prices have obviously been poorly handled. That said, the Bush administration has reduced taxes nationally, protected the country from another terrorist attack and, despite early mistakes, had the guts to defend our interests in the Middle East. This is far better than the cut-and-run and high tax mentality of the liberal interests who control the Democrat Party.
We, therefore, would start the purge at the bottom, beginning with the Republican County Central Committees and the State Party organizations. We believe this is where the Republican Party has gone the farthest astray and why grass roots Republicans are disgusted with the leadership of their Party.
