“REPUBLICAN” PAGANO SABOTAGES HIS PARTY’S CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR
by Chuck MacNab
St. Peters Mayor Len Pagano is supporting Democrat Jay Nixon for Governor, officially, in a letter that specifically and deliberately references his Republican Party credentials in his endorsement. It is not unusual for individuals in the Party to differ on candidates in a PRIMARY election. It is quite another thing to sabotage your party’s chosen candidate after he/she has been selected to run in the GENERAL election! Perhaps we should not be surprised. Pagano has been turning St. Peters into a Democrat stronghold ever since he became Mayor. Anyone who takes a good look at his background and what he has been doing knows it. Pagano calls himself a Republican. If he is, then we were all born on the moon!
Pagano got himself elected by promising both Republicans and Democrats in St. Peters that he would bring good government to town and get rid of some of the onerous policies of certain recent administrations. After the election was over and he had won, he suddenly remembered that he had voted FOR many of those old policies and “conveniently” forgot that he had promised to correct them. Oh, he made a few minor “adjustments,” but continued to pursue past mistakes. The Premier 370 development project that has the potential to bankrupt the city is one. He also kept all the old advisors who promoted outside interests and shut off those who got him elected in favor of his “new friends” - the same ones who we believe are “in it for the money” and who supported the old regime. It might prove interesting to follow-up on how Mayor Pagano operates with respect to the State’s Sunshine laws.
Now he has stabbed his own Party in the back by providing a campaign letter that’s being used against Republican candidate Kenny Hulshof and declaring himself a proud “Republican” for Democrat Jay Nixon! Regardless of Party affiliation, nobody respects or admires an elected official who receives the support of his Party in his own campaign and then thumbs his nose at that Party and its supporters in the General Election. As a Republican, and an elected official declaring himself under the Republican Party banner, he should support the Party’s nominee, at least publicly. As previously mentioned, this is NOT a primary election!
Some might consider it “traitorous” to write an endorsement for the opposition candidate for Governor and provide it to the opposition Party’s campaign. Perhaps those Republicans, who feel that he has crossed the line and is just using majority Republican voters while turning his back on Republican policies, should think of mounting a RECALL action. Mayor Pagano has turned his back on his Party! The Republican Party should EXPEL Len Pagano from its ranks and officially declare that he is NO LONGER a Republican. He can then call himself what he really is. We can think of some appropriate choices in this regard!
